Certification Process, Routes, and Program Fees

Minimum Requirements Common to all Certification Areas and Levels:
The following evaluated through official transcripts
(unofficial transcripts can be used temporarily):

  • a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution degree must be verifiable through an official transcript stating date degree conferred
  • a minimum cumulative grade point average (gpa) of 2.5 on a 4 point system, or 2.75 on the last 60 hours
Step 1 - Program Screening and Acceptance Process
  • Completed Program Application / Elements of Application used for Screening
  • Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal - a minimum score on Subsets 2-5 required with only 1 retake allowed
  • Competence in speaking and understanding English - as determined through intake process
Step 2 - Preparation Process - Sessions Offered in June, August, and January
  • Classroom and Behavior Management
  • Research-based Instructional Strategies
  • Human Growth and Development
  • Equity for the Exceptional Learner
  • Ethics in the Workplace
  • Use of Technology in the Classroom
  • Process of Becoming a Reader
  • Curriculum Planning

Specifically for EC-6 Generalist, EC-6 Bilingual Generalist, and EC-6 ESL Generalist:

  • a minimum of a 2.5 gpa for 24 hours in English, Mathematics, and a combination of Sciences and Social Sciences
  • for EC-6 Bilingual Generalist: a 2.5 gpa for 6 hours in Spanish and proficiency in Spanish (by interview)

Specifically for 4-8 certifications:

  • for Mathematics, or English Language Arts and Reading a minimum of a 2.5 gpa for 24 hours in a single specialized training area and a 2.75 gpa for 12 advanced hours of the 24
  • for Science: a 2.5 gpa for 24 hours from a combination of 3 of the 4 areas: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Geology/Astronomy and 2.75 gpa for 12 advanced hours of the 24
  • for Social Studies: a 2.5 gpa for an 24 hour combination of History, Government, or Geography/Economics and a 2.75 gpa for12 advanced hours of the 24
  • for English Language Arts and Reading / Social Studies: a 2.5 gpa for 12 hours of English, and 12 hours from a combination of History, Government, or Geography/Economics and a 2.75 gpa for 6 advanced hours of English and 6 advanced hours from a combination of the Social Studies
  • for Mathematics/Science: a 2.5 gpa for 12 hours of Math and 12 hours from a combination of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Geology/Astronomy and a 2.75 for 6 advanced hours in Mathematics and 6 advanced hours from any of the Sciences
  • 4-8 Generalist, 4-8 Bilingual Generalist, and 4-8 ESL Generalist: eligibility determined by program directors

Specifically for 8-12 certifications:

  • for English Language Arts / Reading, History, Mathematics, and Life Science (Biology), and Chemistry: a minimum of a 2.5 gpa for 24 hours and a 2.75 gpa for 12 advanced hours of the 24
  • for Science: a 2.5 gpa for 32 hours to include 8 hours in Physics, 9 in Chemistry, and 15 in Biology and a 2.75 gpa for 18 advanced hours of which 8 must be Biology
  • for Physical Sciences: a 2.5 gpa for 33 hours to include 15 in Chemistry and 15 in Physics and a 2.75 gpa for 18 advanced hours, 9 from each area
  • for Social Studies: a 2.5 gpa for 33 hours to include 21 hours in History (12 in U.S. and 9 in World) plus 12 hours from a combination of Geography, Government, and Economics and a 2.75 gpa for 18 advanced hours of the 33
  • for CATE (Career and Technology Education): eligibility determined by CATE Coordinator

Specifically for EC-12 Art, Music, Health and Physical Education certifications:

  • a minimum gpa of 2.5 for 33 hours in specialized training area and a 2.75 gpa for 24 advanced hours

Specifically for EC-12 Special Education:

  • a minimum of a 2.5 gpa for 24 hours in English, Mathematics, and a combination of Sciences and Social Sciences

Specifically for Technology Related Certificates:

  • eligibility determined by program directors
Step 3 - The Two-Semester Teaching Internship

Full-time employment and full-time salary paid by employing school district

Teaching Internship --> August through June
Teaching Internship --> January through December
